According to Apple Insider, some Apple retail stores on Thursday started offering unrestricted quantities of the iPhone 3G to be sold without a contract for the unsubsidized price of $599 per 8GB handset and $699 per 16GB. While still locked to AT&T’s service, Apple is allowing users to purchase them in unrestricted quantities and with no existing AT&T contracts, unlike AT&T’s offer. While probably not Apple’s intent, the new offer could potentially allow someone to purchase a number of iPhones to be unlocked and resold without the need to deal with a contract. It is believed that the offer is an attempt to clear out inventory, possibly to make way for new hardware later this year.
