Stanford Assistant Professor CCRMA Ge Wang’s Smule has struck again with its sequel to the stunningly popular “Ocarina” ($0.99 – Download) iPhone app. Smule yesterday released “Leaf Trombone: World Stage” ($0.99 – Download), a similarly innovative music toy.
Leaf Trombone allows you to take advantage of the fascinating multi-touch system to manipulate a ‘stem’ as the main body of a real trombone. Preset songs are built-in to the application, the ‘notes’ will flow across the screen to guide you where to position the stem whilst you blow into the microphone.
Just like Ocarina had its world-tracking feature, Leaf Trombone has a feature called “World Stage”, where you can opt to be a ‘judge’ to observe or judge another player’s performance around the world. This feature is definitely fascinating, and encourages the spirit of the iPhone community.
I think this app was released a lot earlier than expected, as when it was first demoed in Apple’s iPhone 3.0 Event, Mr. Wang said that they were developing this for 3.0. So, as and when 3.0 to is released (rumored to be WWDC in June), and we can expect Smule to release an update including those promised features like multi-iPhone support with Bonjour.
