Apple has just done something very unconventional in its history, and quietly changed the legal name of the “iPhone 3G S” by removing that cumbersome space. The ‘new’ product is now called “iPhone 3GS”, as it should have been called in the very first place. Since Apple did it as discreetly as they could, we didn’t get word from them the reason for the space removal, but we’re guessing that it could be due to legal issues. When Apple comes to (or already tried to) trademark the name, it would have difficulties trademarking generic terms such as “3G” and “S”. “3GS” would be much easier to trademark. Boy, would it be interesting if Apple holds a trademark to a latin alphabet in the English language!
On the (now called) iPhone 3GS product page, Apple keeps the “3G” followed by an “S” in a rounded square graphic as the main branding style for the iPhone 3GS, but refers to it in text as the “3GS” without the space.
Why I say this is a weird move on Apple’s part, is it probably realized it made a mistake originally releasing it as “3G S”, and I’m sure they had this debate before officially naming it, and ended up with the wrong decision. Now all the over 1 million units of “3G S”s already sold have been outdated, in favor of the “3GS”. Yes, I’m assuming Apple is now changing its manufacturing processes to update all the documentary with the new name. For those Apple enthusiasts out there who just hate owning old stuff, take your stab at Apple now!
